Mama holds me in her arms

On this day

four weeks ago,

I sat next

to my mother

for her

last hours

advocating,

singing

touching

stroking

being present

for her.

Whatever

my heart

could do,

I did.

Pure

full-hearted

service

satisfies like

nothing else.

*

I have had many

of those experiences –

but hadn’t made

the connection.

Assisting leaders

in programs,

a participant

at the ER,

a mentor

at her book launch,

my husband

at his annual art events.

Attending to the whole

and the parts.

Full-hearted

full-throated

loving.

Focused.

Intentional.

Present.

*

A month

has passed.

The heart

can hardly

breathe or

speak,

for what

came after

silenced me

and there

I still remain

unveiling

truths.
